Are meringue cookies supposed to be chewy or did I mess up?

I just tried my hand at making meringue cookies and they turned out kinda chewy. Is that how they're supposed to be, or did I take a wrong turn somewhere? 
I was aiming for that light, airy texture. Would love to get your thoughts on this. Thanks!

Ah, bummer about the chewy meringues! They're supposed to be light and crispy, not taffy-like. Maybe try whipping the egg whites longer next time and bake 'em at a lower temp for longer. Good luck!
