Hey everyone! I wanted to share one of my all-time favorite recipes—Braised Pork in Sweet Soy Sauce. It’s a hearty, comforting dish that’s perfect for family dinners or impressing guests. My grandma used to make this, and it’s been a staple in my house ever since. It’s surprisingly simple but so flavorful!
Would love to hear if you give it a try or if you have your own version of this dish. Let’s swap tips!
Ingredients:
- 2 lbs pork belly (or pork shoulder works too)
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 5 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 medium onion, sliced
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 1/4 cup dark soy sauce (for that deep color)
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup water
- 2 star anise pods
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1 tbsp rice vinegar (optional, for a hint of tang)
- 1-2 boiled eggs (optional, but trust me, they soak up the sauce beautifully!)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
- Cut the pork into chunks (about 1.5-inch pieces). Season lightly with salt and pepper.
- Heat the oil in a pot or deep skillet over medium heat. Brown the pork on all sides, then set aside.
- In the same pot, sauté the garlic and onion until fragrant. Add the pork back in.
- Pour in the soy sauce, dark soy sauce, and water. Stir in the brown sugar, star anise, and cinnamon stick.
- Bring everything to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer, covered, for about 45 minutes to an hour. Stir occasionally and add a splash of water if it looks too dry.
- If you’re adding eggs, toss them in during the last 15 minutes of cooking so they soak up the sauce.
- Taste and adjust seasoning—sometimes I add a tiny bit more sugar or soy sauce, depending on the mood!
