Ingredients:
- 6 cups day-old bread, cubed (French bread, brioche, or challah works well)
- 2 cups milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 3 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 cup raisins (optional)
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup brandy or bourbon (optional)
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
- Prepare Bread: Place the cubed bread in the greased baking dish. If using, sprinkle the raisins evenly over the bread cubes.
- Make Custard: In a large bowl, whisk together the milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg until well combined.
- Combine Bread and Custard: Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes. Gently press the bread down with a spoon or spatula to ensure it absorbs the custard. Let it sit for about 15 minutes to soak.
- Bake: Drizzle the melted butter over the top of the bread pudding. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Make the Sauce (optional): While the bread pudding is baking, prepare the sauce. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the granulated sugar and whisk until dissolved. In a small bowl, beat the egg and then gradually whisk it into the butter-sugar mixture. Cook, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens slightly (about 1-2 minutes). Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and brandy or bourbon, if using.
- Serve: Let the bread pudding cool slightly before serving. Drizzle the optional sauce over each serving, or serve it on the side.
- Enjoy: Enjoy this warm, comforting dessert on its own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
