  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup warm water (about 110°F/43°C)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (plus more for brushing)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning (optional)
  • Grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, mix the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. Make the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
  5. Shape the Breadsticks: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Once the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it out onto a floured surface. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long stick (about 6-8 inches).
  6. Second Rise: Place the breadsticks on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover with a towel and let them rise for another 20-30 minutes.
  7. Bake: Brush the breadsticks with olive oil and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese, if desired. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
  8. Serve: Let them cool slightly before serving. Enjoy them warm with marinara sauce, garlic butter, or your favorite dip!

Tips

  • For extra flavor, you can add herbs directly to the dough or on top before baking.
  • You can also sprinkle sea salt on top for added flavor.
Enjoy your homemade breadsticks!
