I recently whipped up a classic British dish, Toad in the Hole, and it was a hit! This comforting recipe combines savory sausages with a fluffy Yorkshire pudding batter, making it a perfect meal for a cozy evening. Here's how you can make your own Toad in the Hole at home:
Ingredients:
- 8 pork sausages
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup milk
- 3 large eggs
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- Freshly ground black pepper
- Fresh thyme leaves (optional, for garnish)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Batter:
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, milk, eggs, and salt until you have a smooth batter. Let it rest for at least 30 minutes to an hour. This helps the batter to rise better during baking.
2. Cook the Sausages:
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Place the sausages and vegetable oil in a large, ovenproof baking dish. Bake in the preheated oven for about 10-15 minutes, or until the sausages are browned and starting to cook through.
3. Combine and Bake:
- Carefully remove the baking dish from the oven. Pour the batter evenly over the sausages. The hot oil will help the batter to start cooking immediately, which is key for a good rise.
- Return the dish to the oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the batter is puffed up and golden brown.
4. Serve:
- Once cooked, remove the Toad in the Hole from the oven. Let it sit for a few minutes before serving.
- Garnish with fresh thyme leaves if desired, and serve hot with a side of onion gravy and vegetables.
