Ingredients
For the Cake
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs, room temperature
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup whole milk, room temperature
For the Caramel Frosting
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 2 cups packed brown sugar
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
For the Cake
- Preparation:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- Mix Dry Ingredients:
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
- Cream Butter and Sugar:
- In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
- Add Eggs and Vanilla:
- Beat in the eggs one at a time, ensuring each is fully incorporated before adding the next. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Combine Dry Ingredients and Milk:
- Alternately add the dry ingredients and milk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
- Bake the Cakes:
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
For the Caramel Frosting
- Make the Caramel Base:
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Stir in the brown sugar and cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture comes to a boil. Boil for 2 minutes.
- Add Milk:
- Carefully add the milk (the mixture will bubble up), stirring continuously. Bring the mixture back to a boil, then remove it from the heat and let it cool for about 10 minutes.
- Mix in Powdered Sugar:
- Gradually whisk in the powdered sugar until the frosting is smooth and creamy. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Frost the Cake:
- Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a layer of caramel frosting on top. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining frosting.
