- 500g pork tenderloin or pork belly, sliced into thin strips
- 3 tablespoons hoisin sauce
- 3 tablespoons soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1 tablespoon Chinese rice wine or dry sherry
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic
- 1 tablespoon minced ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder
- 1/4 teaspoon red food coloring (optional, for authentic color)
- Sliced green onions and sesame seeds for garnish (optional)
- In a bowl, mix together hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, rice wine, minced garlic, minced ginger, Chinese five-spice powder, and red food coloring (if using).
- Add the pork slices to the marinade, ensuring they are well coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight for best flavor.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Remove the pork from the marinade and shake off any excess.
- Place the pork slices on a baking tray lined with parchment paper or aluminum foil, leaving space between each slice.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the pork is cooked through and caramelized on the edges, flipping halfway through.
- Remove from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before slicing.
- Garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds, if desired.
Serve your homemade char siu hot with steamed rice or noodles, and enjoy the delicious flavors!
