- 2 slices of bread (any type you prefer)
- 2 slices of your favorite cheese (such as cheddar, American, Swiss, or mozzarella)
- Butter or margarine, softened
- Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-low heat.
- Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread.
- Place one slice of bread, butter side down, on the skillet or griddle.
- Layer the cheese slices on top of the bread in the skillet.
- Place the second slice of bread, butter side up, on top of the cheese.
- Cook until the bottom slice of bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese begins to melt, usually about 2-3 minutes.
- Carefully flip the sandwich with a spatula and cook the other side until golden brown and the cheese is completely melted, about 2-3 more minutes.
- Remove from the skillet or griddle and let it cool for a minute.
- Cut the sandwich diagonally if desired, and serve hot.
