I recently made Hawaiian Loco Moco, and it was a delightful taste of Hawaii! This comfort food classic features a bed of rice topped with a juicy hamburger patty, a sunny-side-up egg, and a generous drizzle of rich brown gravy. It’s a simple yet satisfying dish that brings together savory flavors in a unique way. Here’s how you can whip up this delicious meal at home:

Ingredients:

  • For the Loco Moco:
    • 1 cup cooked white rice (jasmine or short-grain rice works best)
    • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (or a mix of ground beef and pork)
    • 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
    • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (optional, for binding)
    • 1 egg (for the meat mixture, optional)
    • Salt and pepper, to taste
    • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (for frying)
  • For the Gravy:
    • 2 tablespoons butter
    • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
    • 2 cups beef broth (or chicken broth)
    • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
    • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • For Serving:
    • 2 eggs (for frying on top)
    • Green onions, sliced (for garnish)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Rice:

  • Cook the white rice according to package instructions. Set aside and keep warm.

2. Make the Hamburger Patties:

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, chopped onion, breadcrumbs (if using), egg (if using), salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
  • Divide the mixture into 2-4 equal portions and shape into burger patties.

3. Cook the Patties:

  • Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the burger patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until they are browned and cooked to your desired doneness. Remove from the skillet and keep warm.

4. Make the Gravy:

  • In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour to create a roux, cooking for about 1-2 minutes until it turns golden brown.
  • Gradually whisk in the beef broth and soy sauce, stirring constantly until the gravy thickens. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

5. Fry the Eggs:

  • In another skillet, fry the eggs sunny-side up or to your preference. Season with salt and pepper.

6. Assemble the Loco Moco:

  • On a plate, place a generous scoop of rice. Top with a hamburger patty, then a fried egg, and finally drizzle with the rich gravy.
  • Garnish with sliced green onions for a fresh touch.

Conclusion

Hawaiian Loco Moco is a hearty and satisfying dish that perfectly combines flavors and textures in every bite. The juicy patty, creamy egg, and savory gravy over rice make it a comfort food favorite you can enjoy any day of the week. It’s a taste of Hawaii that will surely leave you wanting more! 🌺🍳🍚✨

These were delicious. It did take me 2 hours like the recipe states, but I think the next time it will go much faster. And there will definitely be a next time!:love:
