Homemade Polish Pierogi Recipe:
Ingredients:For the dough:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra for dusting
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- Your choice of filling, such as mashed potatoes, cheese, sauerkraut, or ground meat
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, sour cream, and melted butter until well combined.
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until a dough forms.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel and let it rest for 30 minutes.
- While the dough is resting, prepare your desired filling(s).
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface to a thickness of about 1/8 inch. Use a round cookie cutter or glass to cut out circles of dough.
- Place a small spoonful of filling in the center of each dough circle.
- Fold the dough over the filling to form a half-moon shape and press the edges firmly to seal. You can use a fork to crimp the edges for a decorative touch.
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Carefully drop the pierogi into the boiling water, working in batches to avoid overcrowding the pot.
- Cook the pierogi for 5-7 minutes, or until they float to the surface and are cooked through.
- Use a slotted spoon to transfer the cooked pierogi to a plate or baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- If desired, you can now fry the pierogi in a skillet with butter until golden brown and crispy on both sides.
- Serve the Homemade Polish Pierogi hot, topped with sour cream, sautéed onions, bacon bits, or your favorite toppings.
