How to make brain cupcakes look realistic for a Halloween baby shower?

Hey everyone. I am hosting my bff's baby shower! The theme is Halloween. Instead of a cake I'm making a treats table. Apple shaped rice krispies treats, bone shaped rice krispies treats, pumpkin roll, pumpkin bread, eyeball cake pops, etc. I also want to try making brain cupcakes. Tips on what you would use to make the top of the cupcake look like brains? The way me & sis were thinking was frosting, coloring it to resemble the color of a brain, piping it on to the cupcake & adding some red gel on top for blood. TIA
