Is German chocolate cake supposed to taste bitter, or is it just me?

Hi, cake lovers! I just tried making German chocolate cake for the first time, and mine turned out a bit on the bitter side. Is it supposed to taste like that, or did I maybe go wrong somewhere? Would love to hear your experiences and tips for getting it just right. Thanks!

German chocolate cake shouldn't be bitter! It's rich, but the chocolate flavor should be sweet and decadent .. Maybe you accidentally used dark chocolate instead of semisweet? Also, overbaking can make any cake bitter
