I'm excited to share a delightful recipe inspired by the beloved Oden Soup from the legendary anime One Piece. This hearty dish features a variety of ingredients simmered in a rich, savory broth. Just like the Straw Hat Pirates' journey, this Oden Soup promises an adventure for your taste buds. Each bite offers a tantalizing blend of sweetness, warmth, and depth. 🍲πŸ₯✨

Ingredients:
Oden-Japanese-Fish-Cake-Stew.jpg

  • 1 small daikon radish (about 1 pound)
  • 1 packet konnyaku (9 oz)
  • 1 packet oden set (assorted Japanese fish cakes and fish balls, about 27 oz)
  • 1 packet deep-fried firm tofu cutlet (6.5 oz)
  • 2 pieces aburaage (optional)
  • 2 pieces Japanese rice cake (optional)
  • 4 hard-boiled eggs
  • 1 packet hanpen (4.6 oz)
  • 4 pieces dried knotted kombu
  • 6 cups dashi (Japanese soup stock)
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp sake
  • 2 tbsp mirin
  • Β½ tsp salt

Instructions:

  1. Peel and slice the daikon into 1-inch rounds. Score a cross on one side of each slice.
  2. Cut the konnyaku into triangle shapes and blanch them in boiling water for 3 minutes.
  3. Bring a large pot of water to a boil and briefly boil the oden set to remove excess oil.
  4. If making mochi kinchaku, blanch aburaage in boiling water for 15-30 seconds, then cut into pockets and stuff with small pieces of mochi.
  5. In a large pot, combine dashi, soy sauce, sake, mirin, and salt. Mix well.
  6. Add daikon, konnyaku, hard-boiled eggs, and hanpen to the pot. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 20 minutes.
  7. Cut larger fish cakes into smaller pieces for easier eating.
  8. After 20 minutes, add oden set, atsuage, and dried knotted kombu to the pot. Cook for 10 minutes.
  9. Add hanpen and mochi kinchaku (if using), and cook for an additional 3 minutes.
  10. Serve hot with karashi hot mustard on the side, if desired.
