I recently made Romanian Mici (also known as Mititei), and let me tell you, they were absolutely delicious! These grilled sausages are a beloved street food in Romania, and they’re packed with flavor. Made from a mixture of beef and pork, seasoned with garlic, thyme, and other spices, Mici are perfect for grilling and making any barbecue feel special. Here’s how you can make them at home!

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 lb ground pork
  • 4-5 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon ground thyme
  • 1 tablespoon ground paprika
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup beef broth or water (for moisture)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (optional, to help with binding)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Meat Mixture:

  • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef and ground pork. Add the minced garlic, baking soda, thyme, paprika, black pepper, and salt. These spices are what give Mici their distinctive flavor.
  • Gradually add the beef broth or water, mixing as you go, to make the mixture moist and sticky. If needed, you can also add a tablespoon of vegetable oil to help the mixture bind together.
  • Use your hands to thoroughly combine all the ingredients, making sure everything is well mixed.

2. Shape the Mici:

  • Wet your hands slightly (this will make shaping easier) and form the meat mixture into small cylindrical sausages, about 3-4 inches long. The shape should be similar to that of a sausage, but smaller and slightly thicker.
  • Repeat until all the mixture is shaped into Mici.

3. Grill the Mici:

  • Preheat your grill or barbecue to medium-high heat.
  • Lightly oil the grill grates or use a grilling pan.
  • Place the Mici on the grill and cook them for about 10-12 minutes, turning frequently to ensure they are evenly cooked and get a nice, golden-brown color on all sides. They should be fully cooked through, with an internal temperature of at least 160°F (71°C).

4. Serve:

  • Serve the Mici hot off the grill with a side of mustard (a Romanian classic!) or some crusty bread. You can also pair it with a simple salad or pickled vegetables to balance the richness.

Conclusion:

Romanian Mici are a true taste of Romania—juicy, flavorful, and smoky from the grill. Whether you’re hosting a barbecue or just craving something a little different, these sausages are a fantastic choice. The combination of spices, garlic, and the tender texture of the meat makes Mici irresistible. Enjoy them with your favorite sides and a cold drink for an authentic Romanian experience! 🍖🔥🍻

I think mici are so flavorful! Though, getting the right mix of beef, lamb, and spices can be tricky. Do you have a favorite recipe? 🌭✨.
