Equipment:

  • Nonstick Skillet
Ingredients:

  • 2 ahi tuna (yellowfin tuna) steaks (about 4 oz. each, 1" thick)
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt (omit if marinating for more than a couple of hours)
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil or olive oil
  • Green onions, toasted sesame seeds, and lime wedges for serving (optional)
Instructions:

  1. Pat the ahi tuna steaks dry with a paper towel and place them on a plate or inside a plastic bag.
  2. In a bowl, mix together soy sauce, toasted sesame oil, honey, kosher salt (if not marinating for too long), black pepper, and cayenne pepper until honey is fully dissolved. Pour this marinade over the tuna steaks, ensuring they are completely coated. Optional: Marinate for at least 10 minutes or up to overnight in the refrigerator. You can also reserve some marinade for drizzling over the cooked fish later.
  3. Heat a medium skillet (preferably non-stick or well-seasoned cast iron) over medium-high to high heat until very hot.
  4. Add canola oil to the hot pan and then sear the tuna for 1 – 1½ minutes on each side for medium rare (2 -2½ minutes for medium-well to well, 30 seconds for very rare). The cooking time may vary based on the thickness of the tuna steaks. Use your best judgment on the heat level to prevent burning the marinade.
  5. Once cooked, remove the tuna from the skillet and transfer it to a cutting board. Slice it into 1/2 inch slices.
  6. Serve the sliced tuna garnished with green onions, toasted sesame seeds, and a squeeze of fresh lime juice, if desired.
Enjoy your delicious seared ahi tuna steaks! 🐟🔥
