Ingredients:
- 1 small green papaya (about 2 cups shredded)
- 2-3 Thai bird's eye chilies, chopped (adjust to taste)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons palm sugar (or brown sugar)
- 3 tablespoons fish sauce
- 2 tablespoons lime juice
- 1 tablespoon tamarind paste
- 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
- 1/2 cup long beans or green beans, cut into 1-inch pieces
- 2 tablespoons roasted peanuts, roughly chopped
- Optional: dried shrimp, sliced carrots, shredded cabbage, sliced cucumber
- Fresh cilantro leaves and/or Thai basil leaves for garnish
- Prepare Papaya: Peel the green papaya and cut it in half lengthwise. Remove the seeds. Using a julienne peeler or a sharp knife, shred the papaya into thin strips. Place the shredded papaya in a large mixing bowl.
- Make Dressing: In a mortar and pestle, pound the chopped Thai chilies and minced garlic until they form a paste. Add the palm sugar and continue pounding until dissolved. Add the fish sauce, lime juice, and tamarind paste, and mix well.
- Combine Ingredients: Add the halved cherry tomatoes, cut long beans or green beans, and roasted peanuts to the shredded papaya in the mixing bowl. Optionally, add dried shrimp, sliced carrots, shredded cabbage, or sliced cucumber for additional flavor and texture.
- Toss Salad: Pour the dressing over the salad ingredients in the mixing bowl. Using salad tongs or clean hands, toss everything together until well combined and evenly coated with the dressing.
- Serve: Transfer the Som Tum Thai to a serving dish or individual plates. Garnish with fresh cilantro leaves and/or Thai basil leaves.
- Enjoy: Serve immediately as a refreshing appetizer or as a side dish to complement your favorite Thai meal.
