- 1 cup strong brewed coffee, cooled
- 1/2 cup coffee liqueur (such as Kahlua) or 2 tablespoons additional coffee, cooled
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 cup whole milk
- 3 large egg yolks
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup mascarpone cheese
- 1/2 cup ladyfingers, crushed (optional)
- Cocoa powder for garnish
- Prepare the Base:
- In a medium saucepan, heat the milk and sugar over medium heat until the sugar is dissolved.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolks. Gradually add some of the warm milk mixture to the yolks, whisking constantly to temper them.
- Pour the egg mixture back into the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon. Do not boil.
- Cool the Base:
- Remove from heat and stir in the cream, cooled coffee, coffee liqueur (or extra coffee), and vanilla extract.
- Let the mixture cool to room temperature, then refrigerate until completely chilled (at least 2 hours).
- Churn the Ice Cream:
- Once chilled, whisk in the mascarpone cheese until smooth.
- Pour the mixture into an ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturerās instructions.
- Add Ladyfingers (Optional):
- If using, fold in the crushed ladyfingers once the ice cream is nearly done churning.
- Freeze and Serve:
- Transfer the churned ice cream to a container and freeze until firm, about 2 hours.
- Before serving, dust with cocoa powder for a touch of authenticity.
