Let's start cooking!
Alici fritte, or fried anchovies, is a classic Italian appetizer that's crispy, tangy, and oh-so delicious. It's perfect for a light and flavorful starter or a tasty snack. The anchovies are coated in a simple flour and water batter and then fried until golden brown.
Ingredients:
- 1 pound fresh anchovies, cleaned and gutted
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup water
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions:
- Prepare the anchovies: Remove the heads and tails of the anchovies. Pat them dry with paper towels.
- Make the batter: In a shallow bowl, whisk together the flour, water, salt, and pepper until smooth.
- Coat the anchovies: Dip each anchovy in the batter, ensuring it's evenly coated.
- Fry the anchovies: Heat the vegetable oil in a deep skillet or pot to 375°F (190°C). Carefully add the coated anchovies to the hot oil and fry for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
- Drain and serve: Remove the fried anchovies from the oil and drain on paper towels. Serve immediately while hot and crispy.
