INGREDIENTS
- 1 cup warm milk
- 1 package instant yeast
- 3 tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- more flour for dusting
- 1/4 cup baking soda whisked into 3–4 cups warm water
- 1 egg
- coarse salt
INSTRUCTIONS
- Prepare the Dough: In a mixing bowl, combine the warm milk, yeast, brown sugar, butter, and salt, and whisk gently. Add the flour and mix until a dough forms. Move the dough to a floured surface and knead it 10-15 times.
- Let the Dough Rise: Place the dough back in the bowl and drizzle with a little oil to prevent sticking. Cover with a cloth or plastic wrap and let it rise for an hour.
- Shape the Pretzels: Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 6-8 portions. Roll each portion into a long, thin rope and shape it into a pretzel. Dip each pretzel into the baking soda solution and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Bake the Pretzels: Brush the pretzels with the beaten egg and sprinkle with salt. Bake at 450°F for 10-12 minutes, until they are golden brown. Enjoy them with cheese sauce, mustard, or beer cheese soup for dipping.
