something sweet for today!
Ingredients:
- 3-4 ripe bananas (not overly ripe, as they should hold their shape)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup brown sugar (light or dark)
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
- A pinch of salt (optional)
- A squeeze of lemon juice (optional, to prevent browning)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Bananas:
- Peel the bananas and cut them into slices about 1/2-inch thick. If you prefer, you can also cut them into diagonal slices or half-moon shapes.
- Heat the Pan:
- Place a non-stick skillet or frying pan over medium heat and add the butter. Allow it to melt and become bubbly but not browned.
- Add the Sugar:
- Sprinkle the brown sugar evenly over the melted butter. Let it cook for a minute or so until the sugar starts to dissolve and bubble.
- Caramelize the Bananas:
- Add the banana slices to the pan in a single layer. Cook for 1-2 minutes on each side, or until they turn golden brown and caramelized. Be gentle when flipping them to avoid breaking the slices.
- Add Flavorings (Optional):
- If using, add the vanilla extract and a pinch of salt. Stir gently to combine. You can also add a squeeze of lemon juice if desired.
- Serve:
- Remove the bananas from the pan and transfer them to a plate. Serve warm as a topping for ice cream, pancakes, waffles, or yogurt, or enjoy them on their own.
Tips:
- Don’t Overcrowd the Pan: Cook the bananas in batches if necessary to ensure they caramelize properly and don’t steam.
- Use Ripe but Firm Bananas: Overripe bananas can become too mushy and might not hold their shape during cooking.
- Watch the Heat: Keep an eye on the heat level to avoid burning the sugar. Adjust the heat as needed.
