Hey, Foodies! Are you craving for some Mexican dish? It's a Mexican sandwich with a signature of chewy, baguette-like roll. The flavors here are bold, with quick pickled onions, avocado-radish salsa, grilled carne asada, and a layer of refried beans. This is the Carne Asada Torta, and here's how to make it.
Ingredients:
For the Carne Asada:
- 1 pound flank steak
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup fresh lime juice
- 1/4 cup orange juice
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the Torta:
- Bolillo or telera rolls (Mexican sandwich rolls)
- Refried beans
- Avocado slices
- Lettuce leaves
- Tomato slices
- Red onion slices
- Jalapeño slices (optional)
- Mayonnaise
- Hot sauce (optional)
- Mexican cheese (queso fresco or panela), crumbled (optional)
Instructions:
1. Marinate the Carne Asada:
- In a bowl, mix together minced garlic, lime juice, orange juice, olive oil, ground cumin, chili powder, salt, and pepper.
- Place the flank steak in a shallow dish or a resealable plastic bag, and pour the marinade over it. Ensure the steak is well coated.
- Cover the dish or seal the bag, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or preferably overnight, to let the flavors infuse into the meat.
2. Grill the Carne Asada:
- Preheat your grill to medium-high heat.
- Remove the marinated flank steak from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for about 20-30 minutes.
- Grill the steak for about 5-7 minutes per side, or until desired doneness is reached. Flank steak is best served medium-rare to medium.
- Once cooked, transfer the steak to a cutting board and let it rest for a few minutes. Then, thinly slice it against the grain.
3. Prepare the Tortas:
- Slice the bolillo or telera rolls horizontally, but not all the way through, so they open like a book.
- Spread a layer of refried beans on one side of the bread and mayonnaise on the other.
- Layer the sliced carne asada on top of the beans.
- Add avocado slices, lettuce leaves, tomato slices, red onion slices, and jalapeño slices if desired.
- Sprinkle crumbled Mexican cheese on top and drizzle with hot sauce if you like it spicy.
- Close the sandwich and press gently to compact the ingredients together.
4. Serve and Enjoy:
- Serve the carne asada tortas immediately while the bread is still warm and crispy.
- You can pair them with a side of Mexican rice, tortilla chips, or a fresh salad for a complete meal.
