  • ½ cup vegetable oil

Instructions:

  1. Proof the yeast: In a large mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in lukewarm water with a tablespoon of sugar until foamy, about 5 minutes. Stir in oil, 4 beaten eggs (reserve 1 for egg wash), remaining sugar, and salt. Gradually add flour, 1 cup at a time, to make a soft dough. If using a mixer, finish kneading by hand until smooth.
  2. First rise: Clean and lightly oil the bowl, return dough, cover with plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm, draft-free spot for about 1 hour, until almost doubled.
  3. Second rise: Punch dough down, cover, and let rise again for 30 minutes.
  4. Braiding: Divide dough into 2 portions. Divide each portion into 6 balls. Roll into strands, each 16 inches long. Braid into a 6-strand loaf, tucking ends underneath to secure.
  5. Shaping: Lift and shape braid into a plumper loaf. Transfer to parchment-lined baking sheet.
  6. Egg wash: Beat remaining egg and brush half onto loaves, ensuring to cover crevices and sides. Let loaves rise another hour, then brush with remaining egg wash. Optionally sprinkle with sesame seeds.
  7. Baking: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake challah for 30-35 minutes until golden brown or internal temperature reaches 190°F (87°C).
  8. Enjoy: Serve warm with butter for dinner. Save the second loaf for delicious French toast!
This recipe yields two beautifully braided loaves of challah bread, perfect for any occasion!
