For the Filling:
- 2½ pounds apples (about 8 apples), peeled, cored, and chopped
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice (from 1 lemon)
- 1 cup brown sugar
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- ⅓ cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- ⅓ cup brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- 8 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
- ¾ cup whole milk
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1-2 tablespoons turbinado sugar (for sprinkling)
- Kitchen scale (optional)
- 9×13 baking pan
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
- In a large bowl, mix the chopped apples with melted butter, lemon juice, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until well coated. Stir in the flour. Transfer the mixture to your prepared baking dish.
- In another large bowl, whisk together the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, baking powder, and salt.
- Add the butter and use a pastry cutter or fork to cut it into the flour until the mixture is crumbly with pea-sized bits of butter.
- In a liquid measuring cup, whisk together the milk and vanilla extract. Pour this mixture into the dry ingredients and stir gently until just combined.
- Spoon the topping over the apple mixture. Sprinkle with turbinado sugar.
- Bake for 40-50 minutes until the apple filling is bubbling and the topping is golden brown. Allow to cool for 10 minutes before serving.
