Classic Cabbage Rolls Ingredients:
Directions:
Classic Cabbage Rolls Ingredients:
- 1 medium head cabbage (about 3 pounds)
- 1/2 pound ground beef
- 1/2 pound ground pork
- 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce, divided
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1/2 cup uncooked long grain rice
- 1 tablespoon dried parsley flakes
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon fresh dill or dill weed, chopped
- 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1 can (14-1/2 ounces) diced tomatoes, undrained
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
Directions:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Cook the cabbage in boiling water until the outer leaves pull away easily from the head. Reserve 12 large leaves for rolling.
- In a bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, 1/2 cup of tomato sauce, chopped onion, uncooked rice, parsley, salt, dill, and cayenne pepper. Mix well.
- Remove the thick vein from the bottom of each cabbage leaf, making a V-shaped cut.
- Place about 1/4 cup of the meat mixture on a cabbage leaf, then overlap the cut ends of the leaf and fold in the sides. Roll up the cabbage leaf from the cut end. Repeat with the remaining leaves and filling.
- Slice the remaining cabbage and place it in a Dutch oven. Arrange the cabbage rolls seam side down over the sliced cabbage.
- In a separate bowl, combine the diced tomatoes, sugar, and the remaining tomato sauce. Pour the mixture over the cabbage rolls.
- Cover the Dutch oven and bake for 1-1/2 hours, or until the cabbage rolls are tender.
- To cut cabbage for cabbage rolls, remove the thick ridge from the bottom of the cabbage leaf, ensuring tenderness.
- Cabbage rolls are a staple in Polish cuisine, often enjoyed during holidays and special occasions.
- You can freeze unbaked cabbage rolls and cook them later. Simply partially thaw in the refrigerator overnight before baking.
- Covering cabbage while cooking helps lock in steam for faster, more even cooking.
