Novice Foodie
Hi everyone! I recently joined a proper gym for the first time after years of home workouts with just a resistance band and a yoga mat. Walking in on day one was honestly intimidating. There were so many types of workout equipment staring back at me that I froze completely and ended up just using the treadmill for 40 minutes before leaving.
I've been doing some research since then and things are slowly making more sense. I now understand that equipment broadly falls into cardio machines, strength-training tools, and functional fitness gear. But knowing the categories and actually knowing HOW to use each machine confidently are very different things.
For example, I want to build upper body strength. Should I start with the chest press machine or just stick to dumbbells? I've read that machines are safer for beginners because they control your movement range, which reduces injury risk. Is that accurate?
I'm also curious about the Smith machine. Several people at my gym use it constantly but it looks complicated. Is it genuinely beginner-friendly or should I build a foundation first?
The punching bag in the corner also looks amazing for stress relief after tough work days — has anyone incorporated that into a regular routine alongside strength training?
Understanding all the different types of workout equipment available is clearly going to take time. Any advice from experienced gym-goers on where a complete beginner should realistically start would be so appreciated!
