I recently enjoyed preparing Dutch Haring, and it was a delightful experience! This traditional Dutch dish features fresh herring served raw with onions and pickles, often enjoyed as a quick and tasty snack. With its unique flavor and simple preparation, it's a must-try for seafood lovers. Here’s how you can experience this classic Dutch treat at home:
Ingredients:
- 4 fresh herring fillets (cleaned and deboned)
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 8 small pickles (cornichons), sliced
- Fresh lemon wedges (optional)
- Freshly ground black pepper (optional)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Herring:
- If your herring fillets are not already cleaned, make sure to rinse them thoroughly under cold water. Pat them dry with paper towels.
2. Chop the Onion:
- Finely chop the onion and set it aside. This will add a nice crunch and sharp flavor to the dish.
3. Serve the Herring:
- Place the herring fillets on a serving plate. Traditionally, Dutch herring is eaten by holding the fillet by the tail and eating it whole, but you can also cut it into bite-sized pieces if you prefer.
- Sprinkle the chopped onion generously over the herring fillets.
- Arrange the sliced pickles (cornichons) on the plate as well.
4. Garnish (Optional):
- Add a few lemon wedges to the plate for a fresh, citrusy kick.
- Season with freshly ground black pepper if desired.
