Ingredients:

  • For the Naan Dough:
    • 3 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1 ½ teaspoons active dry yeast
    • 1 teaspoon sugar
    • ½ cup warm milk (105°F to 115°F)
    • ½ cup plain yogurt
    • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
    • 1 teaspoon salt
  • For the Garlic Butter:
    • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
    • 2 tablespoons minced garlic
    • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro (optional)
Procedure:
  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, yeast, and sugar.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the warm milk, yogurt, and oil.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. Add more flour a tablespoon at a time if the dough is too sticky.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  6. While the dough is rising, prepare the garlic butter. In a small bowl, combine the melted butter, minced garlic, and chopped cilantro (if using).
  7. Once the dough has doubled in size, punch it down to release the air.
  8. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces.
  9. On a lightly floured surface, roll out each dough piece into a 7-8 inch oval shape.
  10. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat.
  11. Brush one side of the rolled-out dough with melted garlic butter.
  12. Place the dough, buttered side down, on the hot skillet.
  13. Cook for 1-2 minutes, or until bubbles start to form on the surface.
  14. Flip the naan and brush the top with more garlic butter.
  15. Cook for another 1-2 minutes, or until golden brown spots appear on the bottom.
  16. Repeat steps 11-15 with the remaining dough pieces.
  17. Serve the garlic naan hot, brushed with additional garlic butter and sprinkled with chopped cilantro (optional).
Garlic naan is the perfect accompaniment to any Indian curry. But its versatility extends beyond that. Enjoy it as a side with grilled meats, stews, or even simply slather it with butter and enjoy the deliciousness on its own. So, skip the store-bought bread and whip up a batch of warm, flavorful garlic naan at home. You won't regret it!

I enjoy experimenting with garlic naan recipes! I think adding minced garlic to the dough and sprinkling it with fresh cilantro after cooking enhances the flavors. Though serving it warm with a side of curry is my favorite way to enjoy it! 🌶️🥘
