Ingredients:
- 3/4 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 3 cups bread flour (plus more for kneading)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup warm milk (110°F/45°C)
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- Sesame seeds (optional)
- Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm water, active dry yeast, and sugar. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5 minutes, until it becomes frothy.
- Mix Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the bread flour and salt. Add the softened butter and mix until the butter is well incorporated. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture, egg, and warm milk. Mix until a sticky dough forms.
- Knead Dough: Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic. You may need to add a bit more flour if the dough is too sticky.
- First Rise: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
- Shape Buns: Punch down the risen dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a smooth ball and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Flatten each ball slightly with your hand.
- Second Rise: Cover the shaped buns with a damp cloth and let them rise for another 30-40 minutes, until they have puffed up.
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Egg Wash and Topping: Brush the tops of the buns with the beaten egg. Sprinkle with sesame seeds if desired.
- Bake: Bake the buns in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes, or until they are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Cool: Remove the buns from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack.
- Serve: Slice the buns and use them to make your favorite burgers.
- Enjoy: Enjoy the soft, fluffy texture and fresh taste of your homemade hamburger buns!
