Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/3 cup vegetable shortening (or cold butter)
- 2/3 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup milk (if needed)
- 1/4 cup melted butter (for brushing)
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven:
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Mix dry ingredients:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- Cut in the shortening:
- Cut in the shortening (or cold butter) until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. You can use a pastry cutter or your fingers for this step.
- Add buttermilk:
- Gradually add the buttermilk to the dry ingredients, stirring until the dough comes together. If the dough seems too dry, add a bit of milk, a tablespoon at a time, until you get a soft dough.
- Knead the dough:
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead it gently about 10-12 times. Be careful not to overwork the dough.
- Roll and cut the biscuits:
- Roll out the dough to about 1/2-inch thickness. Use a biscuit cutter or a round cookie cutter to cut out the biscuits. Gather any scraps, re-roll, and cut out more biscuits.
- Bake:
- Place the biscuits on an ungreased baking sheet, close together but not touching. Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown.
- Brush with butter:
- Remove the biscuits from the oven and immediately brush the tops with melted butter.
- Serve:
- Serve warm and enjoy!
