I recently made a Philly Roast Pork Sandwich, and it was absolutely delicious! This sandwich is a Philly classic, featuring tender roast pork, sharp provolone cheese, and garlicky broccoli rabe, all piled into a crusty roll. Here’s how you can make it at home:
Ingredients:
For the Roast Pork:
- 3-4 lbs boneless pork shoulder or butt
- 4 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary, chopped
- 1 tablespoon fresh thyme, chopped
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 cup chicken broth
- 1/2 cup dry white wine
For the Broccoli Rabe:
- 1 bunch broccoli rabe, trimmed and cut into 2-inch pieces
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- A pinch of red pepper flakes (optional)
For the Sandwich:
- Crusty Italian rolls or hoagie rolls
- Sharp provolone cheese, sliced
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Roast Pork:
- Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C).
- Using a sharp knife, make several small incisions all over the pork shoulder and insert the garlic slices into the slits.
- Rub the pork with the chopped rosemary, thyme, salt, and black pepper.
- In a large oven-safe pot or Dutch oven, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Sear the pork on all sides until browned.
- Add the chicken broth and white wine to the pot.
- Cover the pot and transfer it to the preheated oven. Roast the pork for 3-4 hours, or until it is very tender and easily pulls apart with a fork.
- Remove the pork from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before shredding it with two forks.
2. Prepare the Broccoli Rabe:
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Blanch the broccoli rabe for 2-3 minutes, then drain and immediately transfer it to an ice bath to stop the cooking process. Drain again and set aside.
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and red pepper flakes (if using), and sauté until fragrant.
- Add the blanched broccoli rabe to the skillet and sauté for about 5 minutes, or until tender. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
3. Assemble the Sandwich:
- Preheat your broiler.
- Slice the Italian rolls and place them on a baking sheet.
- Layer slices of sharp provolone cheese on the bottom half of each roll.
- Place the baking sheet under the broiler for a few minutes, just until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Remove from the broiler and pile a generous amount of shredded roast pork onto each roll.
- Top the pork with a portion of the sautéed broccoli rabe.
4. Serve:
- Serve the sandwiches hot, with a side of your favorite pickles or chips.
