Ingredients:
  • 1 cup yellow lentils (moong dal), rinsed
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
  • 1 green chili, chopped (optional for heat)
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • Salt, to taste
  • Fresh cilantro, chopped for garnish
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or ghee
Equipment:
  • Medium pot
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons
Instructions:
  1. Rinse the lentils under cold water until the water runs clear.
  2. In a medium pot, heat the oil or ghee over medium heat.
  3. Add the chopped onions and sautΓ© until they turn translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Stir in the minced garlic, grated ginger, and chopped green chili (if using). SautΓ© for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  5. Add the chopped tomatoes, ground turmeric, ground cumin, and ground coriander. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the tomatoes are softened and the spices are fragrant, about 5 minutes.
  6. Add the rinsed lentils to the pot and stir well to coat them with the onion-tomato mixture.
  7. Pour in 4 cups of water and bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and simmer uncovered for about 20-25 minutes, or until the lentils are tender and the dal has thickened to your desired consistency.
  8. Season with salt to taste and garnish with chopped cilantro.
  9. Serve hot with steamed rice or naan bread. Enjoy your comforting Dal!
