  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
Ingredients for the filling:
  • 1 lb. pork belly or chicken, diced
  • 1 onion, minced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Hard-boiled eggs, sliced (optional)
Instructions:
  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture and vegetable oil. Mix until it forms a dough.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours or until doubled in size.
  4. While the dough is rising, prepare the filling. In a pan, heat some oil over medium heat. Sauté the onions and garlic until fragrant.
  5. Add the diced pork belly or chicken and cook until browned. Stir in the soy sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, salt, and pepper. Cook for another 5-7 minutes until the meat is cooked through. Remove from heat and let it cool.
  6. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into small balls, about 2-3 inches in diameter. Flatten each ball into a disc and spoon some filling onto the center. Add a slice of hard-boiled egg if desired. Gather the edges of the dough and pinch to seal, forming a smooth bun.
  7. Place each filled bun on a square of parchment paper and arrange them in a steamer basket, leaving some space in between each bun. Let them rise for another 15-20 minutes.
  8. Steam the siopao over boiling water for about 15-20 minutes or until the buns are puffed and cooked through.

Serve the siopao hot and enjoy your delicious steamed buns!
