Swedish Smörgåstårta, or "sandwich cake," is a unique and beautiful dish that combines layers of bread with various savory fillings and toppings. I recently made this for a gathering, and it was a stunning centerpiece that everyone loved. It's perfect for celebrations, picnics, or any occasion where you want to impress your guests. Let’s get into this delicious recipe! 🍞🎉

Ingredients:

For the Cake:
  • 12 slices of white bread (or your choice of bread)
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste
For the Fillings:
  • Option 1:
    • 8 oz smoked salmon
    • 1/2 cup cucumber, thinly sliced
    • 1/2 cup capers
    • 1/4 cup fresh dill, chopped
  • Option 2:
    • 8 oz cooked shrimp, peeled and deveined
    • 1/2 cup avocado, mashed
    • 1/2 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
    • 1/4 cup fresh chives, chopped
For the Toppings:
  • 1 cup mixed salad greens
  • 1/2 cup radishes, thinly sliced
  • Lemon wedges (for garnish)
  • Fresh herbs (dill, parsley, or chives) for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Bread: Trim the crusts off the slices of bread to create a uniform shape. You can use either a rectangular or round cake pan for shaping.
  2. Make the Cream Cheese Mixture: In a mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper. Mix until smooth and well combined.
  3. Assemble the Layers:
    • First Layer: Place a layer of bread at the bottom of your cake pan. Spread a generous layer of the cream cheese mixture on top.
    • Add Fillings: If using smoked salmon, layer the smoked salmon, cucumber, capers, and dill on top of the cream cheese. If using shrimp, spread the mashed avocado and top with shrimp, cherry tomatoes, and chives.
    • Repeat the process: Add another layer of bread and spread the cream cheese mixture. Continue layering until you have about 4-5 layers, finishing with a layer of bread on top.
  4. Chill: Cover the assembled sandwich cake with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours (or overnight) to allow the flavors to meld and the cake to firm up.
  5. Decorate: Once chilled, remove the Smörgåstårta from the pan and transfer it to a serving platter. Spread a thin layer of the remaining cream cheese mixture over the top and sides of the cake. Decorate with salad greens, radishes, and lemon wedges. Garnish with fresh herbs as desired.
  6. Slice and Serve: Use a sharp knife to slice the cake into wedges and serve cold.
Swedish Smörgåstårta is a visually stunning and delicious dish that’s perfect for any gathering. The layers of flavors and textures make it a crowd-pleaser, and it’s surprisingly easy to make. Enjoy this delightful sandwich cake! 😊
