Ingredients:

For the Meatballs:

  • 1 pound ground beef (or a mix of beef and pork)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)

For the Sauce:

  • 1 cup grape jelly
  • 1 cup chili sauce (or BBQ sauce as an alternative)
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Prepare Meatballs: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, chopped onion, minced garlic, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce (if using). Mix until everything is well combined.
  3. Form Meatballs: Shape the mixture into small meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or lightly greased.
  4. Bake Meatballs: Bake the meatballs in the preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes, or until they are cooked through and browned.
  5. Prepare Sauce: While the meatballs are baking, prepare the sauce. In a large saucepan, combine the grape jelly and chili sauce (or BBQ sauce). Add soy sauce and Dijon mustard if you want a bit more complexity in the flavor. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the jelly is melted and the sauce is smooth.
  6. Combine Meatballs and Sauce: Once the meatballs are done baking, transfer them to the saucepan with the sauce. Stir gently to coat the meatballs evenly with the sauce.
  7. Simmer: Let the meatballs simmer in the sauce for about 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
  8. Serve: Serve the sweet and sour meatballs hot, as an appetizer with toothpicks or over rice or noodles for a main dish.

Though I usually use pineapple, I think grape jelly could be a fun alternative! 🥄 What other ingredients do you mix in with the jelly for the sauce?
