Syrian Muhammara Recipe

I recently made Syrian Muhammara, and it was a delightful, flavor-packed dip that's perfect for snacking or serving as an appetizer. This spicy, tangy, and slightly sweet dip made from roasted red peppers and walnuts is incredibly easy to make. Here’s how to prepare it:

Ingredients:

  • 2 large red bell peppers 🌶️
  • 1 cup walnuts, toasted
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced 🧄
  • 2 tablespoons pomegranate molasses
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions:

  1. Roast the Peppers: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Place the red bell peppers on a baking sheet and roast for 20-25 minutes, turning occasionally, until the skins are charred and blistered. Remove from the oven and place the peppers in a bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and let them steam for about 10 minutes. Peel off the skins, remove the stems and seeds, and roughly chop the peppers.
  2. Toast the Walnuts: While the peppers are roasting, toast the walnuts in a dry skillet over medium heat for about 5 minutes, stirring frequently, until fragrant. Let them cool slightly.
  3. Prepare the Muhammara: In a food processor, combine the roasted peppers, toasted walnuts, breadcrumbs, garlic, pomegranate molasses, lemon juice, ground cumin, smoked paprika, and cayenne pepper (if using). Pulse until you have a coarse paste.
  4. Add the Olive Oil: With the food processor running, slowly drizzle in the olive oil until the mixture is smooth and well combined. You can adjust the consistency by adding more olive oil or a splash of water if needed. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Serve: Transfer the muhammara to a serving bowl. Drizzle with a little extra olive oil and garnish with a few whole walnuts or a sprinkle of parsley if desired. Serve with pita bread, crackers, or fresh vegetables for dipping.

Conclusion

Syrian Muhammara is a delicious and versatile dip that adds a burst of flavor to any meal. The combination of roasted peppers, walnuts, and pomegranate molasses creates a unique and addictive taste. Give it a try, and enjoy a taste of the Middle East in your kitchen! 🌶️🥖✨
