Who Are the Greatest Indian Swimmers of All Time?

Hey sports fans! I have been going down a rabbit hole researching Indian swimmers and their achievements, and I wanted to start a discussion here because there is so much to talk about. India rarely gets credit for its aquatic talent, but the history is genuinely impressive.

The name that most people bring up first is Virdhawal Khade — often called the best modern swimmer India has produced. He competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics across the 50m, 100m, and 200m freestyle events and won the Arjuna Award in 2011. But he is far from the only story worth telling.

Arati Saha, born in 1940 in Calcutta, became the first Asian woman to swim across the English Channel in 1959. She was later awarded the Padma Shri — one of India's highest civilian honours. For her era, that achievement was nothing short of extraordinary.

More recently, Sajan Prakash — nicknamed the Michael Phelps of India — represented the country at the 2016 Rio Olympics and continues to push the standard for Indian swimmers at the international level.

I also want to highlight Bhakti Sharma, who became the youngest woman to swim in Antarctic waters — 2.3 km in just over 41 minutes at 1°C. Remarkable.

Who do you think deserves more recognition? Drop your picks and let's get a good debate going!
