I recently made Argentine Provoleta, and it was a cheesy delight that took my taste buds on a journey to Argentina! This delicious dish features a wheel of provolone cheese grilled until it’s gooey and perfectly melted, often served with a sprinkle of herbs and a side of crusty bread. It’s perfect as an appetizer or a fun snack. Here’s how to make it at home:
Ingredients:
- 1 large wheel of provolone cheese (about 8 oz or 225g)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional, for some heat)
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
- Crusty bread or baguette, for serving
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Cheese:
- If the provolone cheese comes with a wax coating, remove it. You can also cut the cheese into a 1-inch thick slice if using a block, but leaving it whole works well for grilling.
2. Preheat the Grill or Oven:
- Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. If you don’t have a grill, you can also use an oven-safe skillet or a cast-iron skillet placed under the broiler.
3. Season the Cheese:
- Drizzle the olive oil over the cheese and sprinkle the dried oregano and crushed red pepper flakes on top. Let the cheese sit for about 15 minutes to absorb the flavors.
4. Grill the Cheese:
- Place the provolone cheese directly on the grill or in the skillet. If grilling, use a grill-safe pan or a piece of aluminum foil to prevent the cheese from falling through the grates.
- Grill for about 5-7 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and starting to brown. Keep an eye on it to prevent burning.
5. Serve:
- Carefully remove the cheese from the grill. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve immediately with slices of crusty bread for dipping.
