I recently tried making Croatian Štrukli, and it was an absolutely delightful experience! This traditional dish from Croatia features layers of dough filled with creamy cheese, making it a versatile dish that can be enjoyed as a savory main course or a sweet dessert, depending on how you prepare it. Here’s how you can create this delicious dish at home:
Ingredients:
- For the Dough:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- About 1/2 cup warm water (adjust as needed)
- For the Filling:
- 1 cup cottage cheese or ricotta cheese
- 1/2 cup sour cream or Greek yogurt
- 1 egg
- Salt, to taste
- Freshly cracked black pepper (optional)
- Chopped fresh herbs (like parsley or chives, optional)
- For Baking:
- 2 tablespoons melted butter (for brushing)
- 1/2 cup heavy cream (for pouring over before baking)
Instructions:
1. Make the Dough:
- In a mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the egg and warm water, mixing until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Wrap it in plastic wrap and let it rest for about 30 minutes.
2. Prepare the Filling:
- In a separate bowl, mix together the cottage cheese (or ricotta), sour cream, egg, salt, and pepper until well combined. If using herbs, fold them in at this stage.
3. Roll Out the Dough:
- After resting, divide the dough into two equal portions. Roll out one portion on a floured surface into a thin rectangle (about 1/8 inch thick). Keep the other portion covered to prevent it from drying out.
4. Assemble the Štrukli:
- Spread half of the cheese filling evenly over the rolled-out dough. Carefully roll the dough into a tight log, starting from one edge. Pinch the ends to seal.
- Cut the rolled dough into 1-inch pieces. Repeat the process with the second portion of dough and remaining filling.
5. Bake the Štrukli:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking dish with butter.
- Place the cut pieces in the prepared baking dish, arranging them closely together. Pour the heavy cream evenly over the top and brush with melted butter.
- Bake for about 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the edges are bubbling.
6. Serve:
- Allow the Štrukli to cool slightly before serving. You can serve it warm or at room temperature, drizzled with a little extra sour cream or yogurt if desired.
