I recently made Pakistani Chana Chaat, and it was a refreshing burst of flavor! This popular street food is a tangy and spicy chickpea salad that's perfect as a snack or appetizer. With chickpeas, fresh veggies, and a zesty tamarind chutney, it’s a perfect balance of crunch, spice, and tang. Here's how you can make this simple, healthy, and incredibly tasty dish!
Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 cups cooked chickpeas (or 1 can, drained and rinsed)
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 1 medium tomato, finely chopped
- 1 cucumber, finely chopped
- 2-3 tablespoons fresh coriander leaves, chopped
- 1-2 green chilies, finely chopped (optional, for spice)
- 1 tablespoon chaat masala (available at most grocery stores or online)
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin powder
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to your spice preference)
- Salt to taste
- 2 tablespoons tamarind chutney (or to taste)
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice (freshly squeezed)
- Pomegranate seeds (optional, for garnish)
- 1/4 cup sev (crunchy chickpea noodles, for garnish)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Chickpeas:
- If using dried chickpeas, soak them overnight and cook them until soft (you can also use a pressure cooker for faster cooking). If you're using canned chickpeas, simply drain and rinse them well.
- Place the cooked chickpeas in a large mixing bowl.
2. Add the Vegetables:
- To the bowl with chickpeas, add the chopped onion, tomato, cucumber, green chilies, and fresh coriander. This will give the dish freshness and crunch.
3. Spice it Up:
- Sprinkle the chaat masala, cumin powder, red chili powder, and salt over the mixture. Mix everything well to ensure that the spices are evenly distributed.
4. Add the Tang:
- Pour in the tamarind chutney and lemon juice. These ingredients will bring in that signature tanginess and sweetness that makes Chana Chaat so irresistible.
- Give the mixture a good toss, making sure everything is well coated with the spices and chutney.
5. Garnish and Serve:
- Garnish with pomegranate seeds for an extra burst of color and sweetness (optional) and top with sev for some crunch.
- Serve immediately as a snack or side dish, and enjoy the flavors!
