  • ½ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup hot water
Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch square baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter with an electric mixer until creamy.
  3. Add the sugar and continue to beat until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Mix in the egg, then add the molasses, blending until smooth.
  4. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and salt.
  5. Gradually incorporate the dry ingredients into the molasses mixture, mixing after each addition. Once combined, stir in the hot water until smooth.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
