Easy Vietnamese Beef Pho Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 10 cups beef broth (store-bought or homemade)
  • 400g dried rice noodles (banh pho)
  • 400g beef sirloin or flank steak, thinly sliced
  • 1 onion, peeled and halved
  • 3-4 whole star anise
  • 3-4 whole cloves
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2-3-inch piece of fresh ginger, sliced
  • 2-3 tablespoons fish sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional toppings: fresh bean sprouts, Thai basil leaves, thinly sliced green onions, cilantro leaves, lime wedges, thinly sliced chili peppers, hoisin sauce, Sriracha sauce

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Broth:
    • In a large pot, add the beef broth, halved onion, star anise, cloves, cinnamon stick, and sliced ginger.
    • Bring the broth to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to develop.
    • After simmering, strain the broth through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove the solids. Return the strained broth to the pot and keep it warm over low heat.
  2. Prepare the Rice Noodles:
    • While the broth is simmering, cook the dried rice noodles according to the package instructions until they are al dente. Drain and rinse the noodles under cold water to stop the cooking process. Set aside.
  3. Prepare the Beef:
    • Season the thinly sliced beef with salt and pepper.
    • In a separate pot of boiling water, blanch the beef slices for about 30 seconds to 1 minute, or until they are just cooked through. Remove the beef from the pot and set it aside.
  4. Assemble the Pho:
    • Divide the cooked rice noodles among 5 serving bowls.
    • Arrange the blanched beef slices on top of the noodles in each bowl.
    • Ladle the hot broth over the noodles and beef in each bowl, ensuring that they are fully submerged.
    • Add fish sauce and sugar to taste, adjusting the seasoning as needed.
  5. Serve:
    • Serve the Vietnamese Beef Pho hot, accompanied by optional toppings such as fresh bean sprouts, Thai basil leaves, thinly sliced green onions, cilantro leaves, lime wedges, thinly sliced chili peppers, hoisin sauce, and Sriracha sauce.
    • Let diners customize their bowls with their preferred toppings and sauces.
Enjoy your homemade Vietnamese Beef Pho with friends and family! Feel free to adjust the seasoning and toppings according to your taste preferences. You can also add other proteins such as cooked shrimp or chicken if desired.
