- For the Broth:
- 4 cups beef or chicken broth
- 1 onion, peeled and halved
- 1 piece of ginger (2 inches), sliced
- 2 star anise
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 4 cloves
- 1 tablespoon fish sauce
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- For the Noodles and Toppings:
- 8 oz rice noodles (pho noodles)
- 8 oz beef sirloin or chicken breast, thinly sliced
- Fresh herbs (cilantro, basil, and mint)
- Bean sprouts
- Lime wedges
- Thinly sliced red chili or jalapeno
- Sliced green onions
- Hoisin sauce
- Sriracha sauce
Instructions:
- Prepare the Broth:
- In a large pot, add the beef or chicken broth.
- Add the onion, ginger, star anise, cinnamon stick, and cloves.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 30 minutes.
- Add fish sauce, soy sauce, and sugar. Stir well.
- Strain the broth to remove the solids, keeping only the clear broth. Keep it hot.
- Cook the Noodles:
- Cook the rice noodles according to the package instructions. Drain and set aside.
- Assemble the Pho:
- Divide the cooked noodles into serving bowls.
- Arrange the raw beef or cooked chicken slices on top of the noodles.
- Pour the hot broth over the meat and noodles. The hot broth will cook the thinly sliced beef.
- Top with fresh herbs, bean sprouts, lime wedges, chili slices, and green onions.
- Serve with hoisin sauce and sriracha on the side for additional flavoring.
