Amish Friendship Bread Recipe 🍞

Ingredients:
For the Starter:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup milk
For the Bread:
  • 1 cup starter (see note)
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • Optional: 1 cup chopped nuts or raisins
Equipment:
  • Mixing bowls
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Wooden spoon
  • Loaf pans
  • Oven
Directions:
Make the Starter:

  1. In a bowl, combine 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar, and 1 cup milk.
  2. Mix well, cover with plastic wrap, and let it sit at room temperature for 3 days. Stir once each day.
Make the Bread:
  1. Preheat your oven to 350Β°F (175Β°C).
  2. Grease and flour two loaf pans.
  3. In a large bowl, mix 1 cup of the starter with 1 cup vegetable oil, 1 cup sugar, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
  4. Add 3 eggs, 2 teaspoons cinnamon, 2 teaspoons baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 2 cups flour. Mix until well combined.
  5. Fold in nuts or raisins if desired.
  6. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared loaf pans.
  7. Bake for 60-70 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Let cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

I think sharing the starter with friends is such a fun tradition! Though, it does mean baking a lot of bread πŸ˜„πŸž
