Hey everyone! I just wanted to share my go-to recipe for Bistek Tagalog (Filipino Beef Steak). It’s a simple, flavorful dish with tender beef, soy sauce, and citrusy goodness. Perfect with a big bowl of rice!
Here’s how I make it:
Let me know if you guys have any tweaks or secret ingredients you use—I’d love to hear!

Ingredients:
- 1 lb beef sirloin or flank steak, thinly sliced
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 2 tbsp calamansi juice (or lemon juice if you don’t have calamansi)
- 1 tsp sugar (optional, but I think it balances the flavors!)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 large onion, sliced into rings
- 1/2 cup water
- 2 tbsp cooking oil
- Freshly ground black pepper to taste
Instructions:
- In a bowl, mix soy sauce, calamansi juice, garlic, and black pepper. Add the beef slices and let them marinate for at least 30 minutes (but longer is better!).
- Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Sauté the onion rings until slightly soft, then remove and set aside.
- In the same pan, add the marinated beef (without the marinade yet) and sear both sides until browned. Work in batches if needed.
- Pour in the remaining marinade and water, then simmer for about 20 minutes or until the beef is tender.
- Add the onions back in, simmer for another minute, and you're done!
