I once tried this recipe on a famous fast food chain, and surprisingly I didn't know chicken and orange were a thing, so looked for a recipe, and viola! Here's a simple recipe for Orange Chicken that you can make at home:
Ingredients:
- 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 3/4 cup orange juice (freshly squeezed is best)
- Zest of 1 orange
- 1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
- 1/4 cup honey
- 2 tablespoons rice vinegar or white vinegar
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon minced fresh ginger
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons water
- Sliced green onions
- Sesame seeds
Instructions:
- Prepare the Chicken:
- Season the chicken pieces with salt and pepper.
- Place the flour in a shallow bowl. Dredge the chicken pieces in the flour until evenly coated, shaking off any excess.
- Cook the Chicken:
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat.
- Add the coated chicken pieces to the skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Remove the chicken from the skillet and set aside.
- Make the Orange Sauce:
- In a bowl, whisk together the orange juice, orange zest, soy sauce, honey, rice vinegar, garlic, and ginger.
- In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with water to create a slurry.
- Combine and Simmer:
- Reduce the heat to medium. Pour the orange sauce into the same skillet.
- Add the cornstarch slurry to the sauce, stirring constantly until the sauce starts to thicken (about 2-3 minutes).
- Finish Cooking:
- Return the cooked chicken to the skillet with the thickened sauce. Toss to coat the chicken pieces evenly with the sauce.
- Simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes, allowing the chicken to absorb the flavors of the sauce.
- Serve:
- Remove from heat. Garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds if desired.
- Serve the orange chicken over steamed rice or noodles.
