  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk, room temperature

For the Caramel Frosting​

  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 cups packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions​

For the Cake

  1. Preparation:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients:
    • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. Cream Butter and Sugar:
    • In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Add Eggs and Vanilla:
    • Beat in the eggs one at a time, ensuring each is fully incorporated before adding the next. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Combine Dry Ingredients and Milk:
    • Alternately add the dry ingredients and milk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  6. Bake the Cakes:
    • Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
    • Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

For the Caramel Frosting​

  1. Make the Caramel Base:
    • In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Stir in the brown sugar and cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture comes to a boil. Boil for 2 minutes.
  2. Add Milk:
    • Carefully add the milk (the mixture will bubble up), stirring continuously. Bring the mixture back to a boil, then remove it from the heat and let it cool for about 10 minutes.
  3. Mix in Powdered Sugar:
    • Gradually whisk in the powdered sugar until the frosting is smooth and creamy. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Frost the Cake:
    • Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a layer of caramel frosting on top. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining frosting.
